Bert and/or Ernie
Bert is evil. Actually, I was always under the impression that Ernie was the one to watch. Evil people seem to fall into two distinct categories: those who come across as evil and those who don’t. From my experience, the former category of people are largely misunderstood—merely prejudiced against by society. They are made to be scapegoats, if you will, and the focus of attention for all that’s bad in the world. Meanwhile, nobody notices the evil of the latter category.
Similarly, there are two ways to lead your life. You can either be aware or unaware. This is not news to you, I’m sure. Every weirdo on every street corner preaches this loudly into your left ear. Every television advert for soap powder lets you in on some amazing secret shared only by you and six million others. Frankly, you’re immune to the idea of awareness. Then, in some kind of post-postmodernistic frenzy, creatives turn this on its head by filling the space between the soap powder ads with stories of extra-terrestrial activities, alternative lifestyles and whatever else they can dream up to fabricate a level of awareness that exists within your own imagination.
What is the moral of this story? It’s either that you have been deprived of the ability to understand the world around you, or that I’m reading far too much into Burt and Ernie. Choose whichever you find easier to accept.
